Mania

Mania is a state of abnormally elevated or irritable mood, arousal, and heightened energy/activity levels. It’s most commonly associated with Bipolar I Disorder and can range from mild to severe, potentially requiring hospitalization.

Key Points:

  • Symptoms: Decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, rapid speech, distractibility, inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, impulsivity, and increased goal-directed activity.
  • Duration: Manic episodes typically last at least one week (or any duration if hospitalization is required).
  • Risks: Poor judgment (e.g., reckless spending, risky behaviors), irritability, and possible psychotic features (delusions, hallucinations).
  • Treatment: Mood stabilizers (lithium, anticonvulsants), antipsychotics, psychotherapy, and lifestyle adjustments (stress management, regular sleep).
