What a circle is

Group therapy, the way it should feel.

Stress at work, becoming a parent, living far from family, losing someone: these can feel like problems you carry alone. Sitting with a few people going through the same thing, and hearing them say out loud what you have been carrying quietly, takes some of the weight off.

A small group and one therapist

Up to twelve people and a licensed therapist who leads every session. Each circle has a topic and a description written by its therapist, so you can see who it is for before you join.

The same time, every week or two

A circle meets on video at a fixed day and time in West Africa Time, for 60 to 90 minutes. The same people at the same time builds something to come back to.

Private by design

First names or an alias only. Cameras optional. Never recorded. What is shared in the circle stays in the circle, and every member agrees to that before joining.

How to join

Four steps, and you are in the room.

  1. Create your Mytherapist.ng account

Sign up on the web app in a minute, or download the app for iPhone or Android. Joining a circle needs an account because the circle needs to know who is in the room.

  2. Pick a circle

Its page shows who leads it, what it is for, when it meets and what a month costs. Read the description to see who it is for.

  3. Answer two quick questions

Whether you have had therapy before, and how things are right now. Only the therapist who leads the circle sees your answers.

  4. Choose your name and pay for the first block

Pick the first name or alias the circle will see, accept the circle agreement, and pay for your first month from your wallet or by card. Then the dates go into your sessions.

What it costs

You pay by the month, and you can stop any time.

The therapist sets the price

Between ₦5,000 and ₦50,000 a month, whatever the circle's rhythm. A weekly circle's month is four sessions; a fortnightly one's is two. You see the full price before you pay.

Wallet or card

Pay the first month from your wallet or by card. A card is kept for the next month, which is charged a few days before it starts. Stop at any time: the sessions you have paid for still run, and nothing more is charged.

Sessions that do not run come back

If the therapist cancels, or too few people have joined by the day before, the session is postponed and added back to your block. A session that ran and you missed is not added back.

Mytherapist.ng Prime members pay 20% less on every month of a circle.Prime is ₦1,000 a month and also brings free 30-minute intro sessions and free reschedules. What is Prime?
Who leads circles

Therapists we have seen do the work.

Circles are led by licensed Mytherapist.ng therapists we invite to run them. Before we invite a therapist, we look at how many one-to-one sessions they have completed on the platform and at their ratings. Every new circle is then reviewed by our team before it opens.

Every member agrees to the same three lines before joining:

  • What is shared in the circle stays in the circle.
  • Members use a first name or an alias, and let others do the same.
  • No recording or screenshots. The app does not record either.

Browse the therapists on Mytherapist.ng at /specialists. A circle is not the right place when you are in crisis: when you join, if you answer that you might be in crisis, we connect you to one-to-one support first and nothing is charged. In an emergency, see helplines in Nigeria.

Questions

Before you join

A circle is a small group of up to twelve people and one licensed therapist, meeting on video at the same day and time every week or every two weeks. Each circle has a topic, such as work stress, grief or new parents. In the Mytherapist.ng app, every group therapy session is called a circle.

The therapist who leads a circle sets its price, between ₦5,000 and ₦50,000 a month. You pay by the block, not by the session: a weekly circle has four sessions in a block and a fortnightly one has two. You see the full price before you pay, and Mytherapist.ng Prime members pay 20% less on every block.

Yes. Members see each other only by the first name or alias each person chooses. Sessions are never recorded, and every member agrees not to record or take screenshots and that what is shared in the circle stays in the circle. Your answers to the joining questions go only to the therapist who leads the circle.

No. Cameras are optional. Many people join with audio only, especially for the first session or two.

Yes. You can stop at any time. The sessions you have already paid for still run, and nothing more is charged. The next block is only charged a few days before it starts, so you always know when a payment is coming.

If the therapist cancels a session, or too few people have joined by the day before, the session is postponed and it is added back to your block. A session that ran and you missed is not added back.

Yes. Circles add to one-to-one therapy; they do not replace it. Many members keep a one-to-one therapist and join a circle too.

No. When you join, if you answer that you might be in crisis, we connect you to one-to-one support first and nothing is charged. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 112 (or 767 in Lagos) or Safe Place Nigeria on 0800 800 2000.
