Getting help in Edo State

Where to start

The Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Benin City, at Uselu, runs a 24-hour emergency service and takes people in for inpatient care. Its drug programme is long: at least three and a half months as an inpatient, or monthly outpatient visits for two years, with detox, therapy and vocational training.

Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital has a Mental Health and Behavioural Medicine department, and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital has a Department of Mental Health. Neither publishes much about it online, so ring before you travel.

Benin City also serves Delta State. Delta's government said in September 2026 that its residents travel to Benin and Port Harcourt for psychiatric care, and that its own neuropsychiatric facility is due by March 2027.

Edo, Esan, Etsako and Pidgin are all spoken across the state. Mytherapist.ng has therapists who work in Pidgin, and every session is online, so you can book from Benin City, Auchi or Ekpoma.
