Mental health in Nigeria: facts and policy
These articles explain mental health law and services in Nigeria: the Mental Health Act 2021, public psychiatric hospitals, drug laws and where to get help.
Nigeria's National Mental Health Act 2021 took effect on 28 December 2022. Before it, the main mental health law was the Lunacy Act of 1958. The new Act gives people with mental health conditions equal rights, bans chaining, requires informed consent and limits involuntary admission. Public psychiatric care is concentrated in a few places. In Lagos, the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Yaba has an emergency unit open 24 hours. Abuja has no federal neuropsychiatric hospital, so public care is at National Hospital Abuja and the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
