Privacy and confidentiality
Plain answers on therapy privacy in Nigeria: who can see what you say, what goes in your therapist's notes, and when confidentiality has limits. These articles are for anyone who has put off therapy because they worry someone will find out.
In Nigeria, the National Health Act and the National Mental Health Act make your health information confidential, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act treats it as sensitive personal data. The exceptions are narrow: your written consent, a court order or a law that requires disclosure, or the need to prevent serious harm. There's no therapist-client privilege in Nigerian courts, so a judge can order records to be produced. If your employer or HMO pays for your sessions, they can see that you used the benefit, but not what you talked about.
Start with when a therapist can break confidentiality. Then read whether your employer will know, or what a therapist can tell your parents, which depends mostly on your age.
