HMO-Covered Therapy in Nigeria: How to Use Your Health Plan to Pay for Sessions

You might not have to pay for therapy out of pocket — and finding out takes one phone call, or a few taps in the app.

Some Nigerian HMOs now cover therapy sessions, and on Mytherapist.ng you can bill supported plans directly at checkout — ₦0 out of pocket, nothing to claim back. Cover is confirmed per session with your HMO before you attend, so you always know where you stand. Here’s how HMO therapy cover works in Nigeria, how to check what your plan includes, and what to do if your scheme doesn’t cover therapy yet.

Does any HMO cover therapy in Nigeria?

Honestly: for a long time, mostly no. Basic HMO packages in Nigeria have historically focused on hospital care, maternity and medication, with mental health left out or limited to psychiatric emergencies. Many people paying for health insurance still assumed — often correctly — that a therapy session wasn’t covered.

That’s changing. Nigeria’s Mental Health Act, signed into law in January 2023, put mental health care on the same legal footing as physical health, and the NHIA Act of 2022 set the country on a path toward broader health-insurance coverage. Employers are adding mental health benefits to staff plans, and a growing number of HMOs now cover therapy — some through partner platforms like Mytherapist.ng.

The practical takeaway: don’t assume your plan excludes therapy. Plans differ widely, corporate plans especially, and the only way to know is to check yours.

How HMO therapy cover actually works

Therapy cover works session by session, not as a blank cheque. When you book a session against your health plan:

  1. You identify yourself with your enrollee ID (the number on your HMO card).
  2. The provider confirms cover with your HMO for that specific session — this is the “authorization” step every scheme uses.
  3. Once your HMO confirms, the session goes ahead and the provider bills your HMO directly. You pay nothing, or only a co-pay if your plan has one.

On Mytherapist.ng this whole loop is built into the booking flow — you enter your enrollee ID once and the confirmation happens behind the scenes.

How to check if your plan covers therapy

Two ways, fastest first:

Check inside the Mytherapist.ng app. Open any therapist, start a booking, and look at the payment step. If your HMO appears under My HMO, you can bill your plan right there. If it doesn’t, you can request it in one tap (more on that below).

Call your HMO’s claims line — the number is on the back of your enrollee card. Ask these four questions:

  1. Does my plan cover mental health consultations or psychotherapy?
  2. How many sessions am I entitled to per year, and is there a co-pay?
  3. Do you cover therapy sessions on Mytherapist.ng?
  4. If not, what’s your process for adding a provider or benefit to my plan?

Write down the name of whoever you speak to. If your plan does cover therapy but not on Mytherapist.ng yet, that fourth question matters — schemes add providers when members ask.

Which HMOs work on Mytherapist.ng today?

  • AllyHMO — supported directly in the app. Pick AllyHMO at checkout, enter your enrollee ID, and book at ₦0 out of pocket.
  • HCI Healthcare — HCI members can access therapy on Mytherapist.ng as part of their plan; log in to your HCI portal or contact their support team to confirm your benefits.

The supported list is growing, and member requests decide who joins it next.

Booking with your HMO, step by step

  1. Pick a therapist and a time at least 24 hours out. The lead time exists so there’s room to confirm your cover before the session. Every therapist’s rate and profile are visible up front.
  2. Choose “My HMO” at the payment step, select your scheme, and enter the enrollee ID from your card. The total changes to ₦0.00 — nothing is charged to your wallet or card at any point.
  3. Tap Reserve. Your slot is held, and our team confirms your cover with your HMO — usually within a day. You’ll get a notification the moment it’s approved, and your session then runs like any other, over video, voice or chat.
  4. If your HMO can’t confirm in time, the session is cancelled before it starts and you’re told immediately, so you can rebook with your wallet or card. No money moved, so there’s nothing to refund.

One privacy note: anonymous booking isn’t available on HMO-billed sessions, because your HMO needs your real details to confirm your plan. What you discuss in the session stays between you and your therapist either way — your HMO confirms cover, not content.

What if my HMO doesn’t cover therapy yet?

You have three good options, and the first takes under a minute:

Request your HMO from the app. At the payment step, tap My HMO → “My HMO isn’t listed” and tell us your scheme’s name and your enrollee details. We email your HMO directly to let them know a member wants to use their plan for therapy, and you get an email with next steps — including a short script for calling their claims line yourself. HMOs move when members ask; when your scheme goes live, you’ll be the first to know.

Check your employer instead. Many companies cover therapy through a workplace benefit even when the HMO plan doesn’t. If your employer sponsors sessions, they apply automatically at checkout — here’s how employer-covered booking works.

Book it yourself, affordably. Every therapist on Mytherapist.ng lists their rate openly, sessions run over video, voice or chat, and students can verify with a school email for discounted rates. Paying out of pocket this month doesn’t stop your HMO covering you next month.

Frequently asked questions

Is therapy covered under NHIA (formerly NHIS)? Basic public packages have historically offered limited mental health cover, and reforms under the NHIA Act 2022 are still rolling out. Cover depends on your specific plan and HMO — check your benefits table or call your claims line rather than assuming either way.

Do I pay anything when I book with my HMO on Mytherapist.ng? No. Nothing is charged when you reserve, and nothing is charged if your HMO doesn’t confirm — money never leaves your wallet or card on an HMO booking.

How long does HMO confirmation take? Usually within a day. That’s also why HMO-billed sessions must be booked at least 24 hours ahead.

Can I use my HMO for couples therapy? You can book a couples session against your plan if your therapist offers them — whether it’s covered is your HMO’s call, and we confirm it with them before the session, the same as any other booking.

What happens if my HMO declines the session? It’s cancelled before it starts and you’re notified with the reason. You can sort it out with your HMO and book again, or rebook the time with your wallet or card. Nothing is charged either way.

Therapy is easier to start when money isn’t the first hurdle. Open the Mytherapist.ng app, start a booking, and look at the payment step — if your HMO is there, your next session may already be paid for. If it isn’t, send the request. Either way, you’ve taken the first step.
