Women's mental health

These articles cover women's mental health in Nigeria, from periods and PMDD to pregnancy, infertility, perimenopause and the pressure to be slim. They're for women who want to understand what they're feeling, and for the people close to them.

Many of these struggles go unnamed. PMDD is often missed because nobody looks for the monthly pattern. Many women meet perimenopause as a sudden change in mood, sleep and concentration, because nobody told them it was coming. Many slimming teas, sold online with before-and-after photos, work as laxatives, and using them to control weight can be a sign of an eating problem. When a couple can't conceive, the blame often falls on the wife.

Start with PMDD: when PMS is something worse, perimenopause, menopause and your mind, or the risks of slimming teas.

If something has changed and you can't explain it, take it seriously. Some causes are physical, so see a doctor too. You can also book a licensed therapist on Mytherapist.ng by video, voice or chat. If you're struggling to cope right now, free lines are on our helplines page.
