Types of therapy
A plain guide to the main kinds of therapy and counselling, from CBT to couples and group therapy, and what happens in each. These articles are for anyone who has heard the names and wants to know what to ask for.
Types of therapy differ in two ways: who is in the room, whether that's you alone, a couple, a family or a group, and how the therapist works. Some approaches, such as CBT, are structured and practical. Others, like non-directive counselling, let you lead. Either way, a counsellor doesn't tell you how to live your life, which is what makes it different from advice from a friend or a pastor. In Nigerian schools you'll also meet a third word, guidance.
Start with types of counselling and who each helps, then how CBT works or what group therapy is.
On Mytherapist.ng you can book individual or couples sessions by video, voice or chat, or join a Circle, a small group led by a licensed therapist. If you want a structured approach, browse therapists who use CBT and skills-based therapies.
