Your first regular money, and it has to cover rent, food, transport and data in a town you don’t know yet. Here is what you really get and how to make it stretch.
The federal NYSC allowance is ₦77,000 a month, paid at that rate since March 2025. Budget from that alone, treat state or PPA extras as a bonus, and keep your monthly clearance, because missing it can cost you pay.
What you actually get
- The federal allowance: ₦77,000 a month. It was raised from ₦33,000 to match the new national minimum wage, and the higher rate was first paid in March 2025.
- Your PPA. NYSC says employers should provide accommodation or an allowance in lieu. Some PPAs pay a monthly stipend; many pay little or nothing. Ask early.
- State or council stipends. Some state governments and local councils announce extra payments for corps members. Amounts vary, and announcements aren’t always followed by payment, so don’t build your budget around them.
What can reduce it
- Missing your monthly biometric clearance. It’s how your allowance is released. Missing it can cost you that month’s pay, and in some cases corps members have had their service extended.
- Leaving your state without permission or missing CDS without a good reason, which can cost allowance and add days to your service.
- Delays. There’s no official published payday, and payments have been delayed before. Keep a buffer.
A simple budget that works anywhere
Prices differ hugely between Lagos, Abuja and a rural posting, so use a method rather than someone else’s numbers:
- Fixed costs first: your share of rent (if your PPA doesn’t house you), transport to work, and data.
- Food by the week: set a weekly amount and shop at the local market rather than daily from kiosks.
- A buffer: put aside something every month, even a small amount, for delays and emergencies.
- Savings: if anything is left, save it for the months after service, when the allowance stops.
- Fun money: a small, fixed amount you can spend guilt-free.
Ways to stretch it
- Share accommodation and cooking with other corps members. It cuts costs and loneliness at the same time.
- Cook in batches and buy staples in bulk at the market.
- Compare data plans and use Wi-Fi at your PPA where you can.
- Walk or share rides where it’s safe.
- Say no kindly to spending that doesn’t matter to you.
Handling money pressure
- Family. “You’re earning now” can arrive with requests. Decide early what you can send, if anything, and say it plainly. Our piece on black tax is about exactly this.
- Comparison. Friends’ “soft life” posts aren’t budgets. Mute them if they’re making you anxious.
- Quick fixes. Betting and loan apps can turn a tight month into a debt that follows you out of service.
Your health costs less than you think
Every corps member is automatically covered by the government’s health scheme for corps members from mobilisation until three weeks after service. Use the NHIA-accredited clinic in your local government area instead of paying out of pocket.
Plan for the month after passing out
The allowance stops when your service year ends, and most people don’t start a new job the next week. Aim to leave service with at least one month’s costs saved, and start your job search a few months before passing out. Our guide to the post-NYSC job hunt covers that stretch.
